Nimbuzz no longer available for Windows Mobile

Google Buzz

windows-mobile-support 1

These might not be the best news of today, but we’d like to inform you that as of July 1st Nimbuzz for Windows Mobile phones will no longer be available for download from our website.

If you already have Nimbuzz on your mobile phone we will continue to offer support until the end of 2010, but no new features will be added, which means there won’t be any future update.

The reason for this decision was simple: due to platform limitations the application was not delivering a great mobile experience like on all the other mobile operating systems.

As you might have read in the news Microsoft is also stepping away from this platform and its limitations. At the moment they are fine tuning the windows phone 7 platform , which promises a completely new look and great jump forward when it comes to usability.

And to answer your next question:  yes, we are looking into the possibility of supporting Windows phone 7 in the future but now we are still waiting for the first devices to surface in order to make that decision.

If you want to continue to use the most up to date Nimbuzz versions on your mobile we remind you that Nimbuzz is also available for: iPhone, Symbian, Android, Java or Blackberry or if your prefer you can use it via PC, Mac or Web.

Thanks for your understanding!

  5. Really, really disappointing, and honestly a bit of a cop-out. Microsoft is not moving away from the WM6.X series, it’s being developed, and will continue to be supported. There are still new phones coming out for WM6.X, and hasn’t the HD2 shown everyone that there is still market potential for Windows Mobile in it’s present guise? It looks like developers have decided that there’s no future, not consumers. Quite a shame because Nimbuzz on WM is a pretty good app.

  6. I thought nimbuzz fired up the windows mobile team lol! Anyway this news makes sense, of course it’s time to move onto windows mobile 7… Btw have you guys seen Opera Mini 5? It’s interface looks really nice and it’s quite smooth. I wish nimbuzz could copy from them…

  7. This is very sad news for me. I thought Nimbuzz was an excellent application on my HTC HD2 (windows mobile 6.5) phone and I use it all the time! I would strongly advise Nimbuzz to test it out on this device and reconsider how “terrible” this platform really is…

    We understand your concerns.
But as mentioned on the Blog post above, due to platform limitations the application was not delivering a great mobile experience like on all the other mobile operating systems, we decided not to operate with this OS in the future.

  17. Its a great news.
    CONSUMER MUST THINK BEFORE BUY.

You cannot go the near shopping and but whatever the salesman want to sell you.
Salesman will sell the big profit mobile, like WM6.5 or iPhone or even Blackberry (no voice sdk support)

Both, useless. But iphone is worst.. a joke! Cant do multitasking!! haaaa. salesmans are laughting you.

Its nice to see developers to support OPEN OS like Symbian and Android.

Hope to see more developers moving to Linux, Ubuntu, Meego, Android, AJAX, and leaving .net, silversh_t, asp, docx… and so on.

For me, is a NICE and COMFORTING NEWS.

  18. Note this news says:
    1) Platform Limitation
    2) Mobile Operating System
    Its doesn’t says
    Hardware Limitation
Which means it’s OS the problem right?

    Mr.Kevinz June 4th, 2010
  19. Tell me this isn’t so!
I’ve only just found NimBuzz (trashed Fring), have tested it on my Samsung Omnia II running WM 6.5.3.

It’s great! I found the only thing I’m having trouble with is connecting to Facebook IM but I’ve got FIM to do that so I’m not that concerned (will try connecting again later).

I’m even able to connect to my Gizmo5 SIP account finally – woohoo!

Please don’t cease development on the (new generation) Windows Mobile (6.5+ is finally becoming a better OS).

    tropolite June 6th, 2010
  20. Windows Mobile has no limitation. The problem is that companys like yours are not able to choose what to use. e.g Iphone is more easy. One OS, one device and just one kind of UI. In windows mobile you got Windows Forms UI for free. The standard is poor of user experience but you can build or buy own controls. Look at Resco Tools. Another big “problem” is there is no limitation of multi tasking and multi processing. If a user open to much applications at same time everything is slow, like on your desktop computer (try to open 10 times eclipse)

Please don’t call it limitation if the real problem is that windows mobile developers are used to get money for their work and the free API is not rich of UI.

  22. Hey Guys, common man, plz don’t do that, u guys r r the best, u all do such great work, u all came so far with Nimbuzz on WM, plz u all look into it and continue supporting it. You all have built a reputation in the IM’s market, y not market it for a small fee just to support it.

  27. That’s unfortunate. The only limitation I encountered was not because of the operating system but because of the bugs in Nimbuzz (like displaying status near the wrong contact for example). Speaking of limitations, it seems to me that iPhone and Windows Mobile 7 forces much more limitations on developers (being one of them myself). It’s rather strange to find “platform limitations” as a reason for killing Windows Mobile version.

  29. Thats quite some sad news :-(

Sadly, there is no real alternative to WM6.5 those days. Android that got no descent off-line navigation app (nothing that gets any near WM igo8), no descent media player (nothing that gets any near the core player) etc etc. Apple iPhone with the nasty Apple policy ? WP7 with no backward compatibility, hence no apps at all ? Symbian with it’s inconvenience GUI ?

Sorry to say that, but WM6.5 is still the best. And i actually consider buying an HD2 to upgrade from what i currently have.

Hopefully they don’t change the protocol any time soon, so the old WM client would still work :-(

  31. Hi, I am really a big fan of NIMBUZZ and it really disappointing me that it will be no longer available for my Window 5 mobile. I think you should think twice before discontinuation. You can extend the features for window phone or can launch another script for the same. I am worrying that one day I’ll lose all my online friends!!!!!! :-( )

  32. I am a great fan of WM and I am disappointed at this news. Personally, I have had a good experience with Nimbuzz on my HTC Advantage, so I don’t know what these people are talking about poor user experience. The only issue I have had with it is that when you change your Yahoo! logon password on your desktop/laptop, Nimbuzz WM does not provide a way for you to update same for Nimbuzz – it simply refuses to connect. That is a bug which I believe should be fixed, at least.

    Raphael June 18th, 2010

  36. Hello all,
Thanks for your comments and feedback, as mentioned above we will no longer work on improving Nimbuzz for Windows Mobile, and we will remove the file to be downloaded from our site.
However if you have it installed on your device you will still be able to use it as usual, but we won’t offer any other update (for the moment).
We consider this is a good choice and for future we are looking into the possibility of supporting Windows phone 7 in the future but now we are still waiting for the first devices to surface in order to make that decision.
    Kind Regards

  37. What is exactly meant by “we will continue to offer support until the end of 2010″? Will that mean that no customer service support will be offered at the end of 2010 or that the server will not support Nimbuzz applications running on Windows Mobile? I really don’t care if any more updates are offered since Nimbuzz runs extremely well on my HD2, but would like to know that I can still connect after the end of 2010. Thank you.

  38. From memory…

Wasn’t the MS WM path strategy to release Win Phone 7 for highend phones and retain WM6.5 and 6.5.x to run in tandum to be a lower cost ’social’ platform (for cheaper handsets). I can understand NB ceasing development on the old platforms WM2003, WM5, but the newer generation has a lot to offer.

I do hope that ‘(for the moment)’ is an indication there could be room for changing this new strategy of NimBuzz

  41. Great. I just signed up only to read this now. This is dumb. WM still accounts for 20% of the smart phone market. Many devices are still sold and lots of people are on contract for another two years from today! WP7 isn’t even out yet.

MS has even announced continued support and development of the WM6.5 codebase with the new Windows Embedded strategy. (Essentially, it’s continuing WM6.5 under a new name for the existing large specialty and LOB niche until WP7 and classic WM can be fused into a single product — think the NT+9X fusion that didn’t occur until MANY years later with XP.) http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=17190

Thank you so much for your response. I really like Nimbuzz and am very happy that I will be able to continue to use the application indefinitely. I presently use Nimbuzz on my HD2 and PC. There are rumors on numerous websites stating that Nimbuzz on Windows Mobile will stop working at the end of 2010, so it’s good to get an answer straight from the source. Once again thanks.

  45. Windows 7 mobile is a completely different platform, really, it’s like saying “We won’t support Windows Mobile, but we may support Platform X later”. It has no bearing on those people who currently use Windows Mobile – looking at the limitations in Windows 7 mobile I’m almost certain my next device will be Android-based, not Windows 7. Possibly iPhone if it stops being crazy expensive where I live and apps finally start supporting the fake “multi-tasking” Apple finally got around to.

Let me add my voice to those who are very disappointed by you abandoning a very nice and working app for the literally millions of Windows mobile phone users out there – heck they are still selling large amounts of great Windows mobile phones every day and there are many great apps on Windows Mobile that have created fantastic touch-friendly interfaces in spite of the limitations of the GUI available. If you fail at that, it is your failure really, not the fault of the platform.

Heck, HTC built a gigantic touch friendly app and put it on Windows Mobile, and now that is almost entirely what most Windows Mobile users see… they call it “HTC Sense UI”, you may have heard of it. ;)

As mentioned previously in the above post we do not longer have development on Nimbuzz for WIndows Mobile devices.
We can however give you some guidance on how to use the application.
Please try to connect the device to the internet network via Wi-Fi, not trough cable, this should work.

We no longer support Windows Mobile Operating system, but if you had the application already installed on your WinMob device, you can still use it.
If not, which this seems to be your case, you won’t be able to install Nimbuzz on it.
In the other hand we do support Symbian platform, if you are going to base your decition on buying a device which supports Nimbuzz, we recommend you to buy a Symbian, Android or iPhone device which are compatible with Nimbuzz.
    Hope this helps.

  57. Could you at least make the last WM versions (WM 6.x Standard and Professional) available for download (w/o support) to allow WM users to stay connected?
Please don’t take away the choices any user can make on their own. There is no need to tell the users what they “need, want or like”, also in terms of performance or experience. They can decide themselves. Patronizing is already done by others, Apple and the likes, WM 7 to follow suit.

We no longer support this platform, but as mentioned previously we will consider implementing a version of Windows Mobile 7 in the future.
