A new wave of 16 MP camera phones coming soon?

 

Because I’m already carrying a phone with a camera all the time, I want it to be an awesome camera. This way there is no need to carry around another device.

Of course, no camera phone can ever replace my DSLR :D ,  but the promise of 16 Mega Pixels sure sounds pretty awesome.

A few days ago, Renesas Technology revealed a new type of camera module that could lead to smartphones packing 16MP cameras and a image resolution of 1920 × 1080.  The phones equipped with the new module will also get high-speed continuous shooting at 15 frames per second at 13 megapixels :D .

Other than the S006 from Sony-Ericsson, I don’t know any other phone to have such a powerful camera. This means that there is still room for competition, so maybe we will see a new wave of a new wave of 16 MP camera phones coming soon :P .

But what will this mean for mobile data? Could these new phones speed up the adoption of 4G mobile internet or LTE? With each picture being the size of 3 normal ones, if you want to share it online you need a fast internet connection and an unlimited data plan, otherwise you can wait forever…

We have no news yet on who will integrate this module in their phones but I guess Nokia will love this technology since they already have the awesome N8 with 12MP camera.

  3. aahh seemingly good news but of course who wouldnt be surprised!

    I’ve a hunch Sony E. gets to pack it into another highly publicized camera phone first (remember satio anyone?)

    of course im sure it comes with a cost….software lags etc. SE usually gets these guinwa pigs tests run ey? (symbian uiq)

    but yes, with more phones packing apps and new modules, high time data servers improve faster too.

    ps: im using a Satio to send this now and hell yea the camera’s way awesome!! A GREAT phone from SE indeed.

  4. Sound wonderful, however the price will be not affordable for everyone. And you’re right, it would be wonderful carrying one device with all features we need instead of having to carry multiple devices. Yet, mobile’s camera, cannot rival high end true camera quality.

    have you ever heard of Nokia N8?? Nokia N8 12MegaPixel Camera has THE SAME sensor size compared to well known brand of compact digital camera.

    SE Satio 12MP Camera sensor size is ONLY the same as 8MPixel Camera sensor size of the digital compact camera. So, if you want the best 12MP camera from Camera phone, right now, only Nokia N8 is the choice.

    - Samsung Pixon12 – 1/2.5″
    - Nokia N86 8MP – 1/2.5″
    - Sony Ericsson Vivaz – 1/3.2″
    .
    Please also note that if you increase the MegaPixel without increasing the sensor size, the picture will have lots of noise.

    In this case, the QUALITY of Nokia N8 picture is on the same level as digital compact camera.

    but I think NoKIA have teken the challenge.
